Little Things at ABC

We are really delighted to welcome Little Things to Airport Business Centre

We are really delighted to welcome Little Things who have joined us at Airport Business Centre.

Little Things At ABC

LeighAnne Hedges founder of Little Things approached us explaining that the organisation had outgrown her dining room and back bedroom and were now looking for an office space which could accommodate them on a very limited budget. We were pleased to have the opportunity to support such a unique and worthwhile service and to offer them an office which fits their needs at a below market rental which was within their budget.

Little Things is a small UK based organisation providing clothing for deceased babies who are too small for standard clothes. Many babies are born so small that shop bought clothing is far too large. At Little Things they believe that every child, regardless of size should have the same rights and every child, should be ‘dressed with dignity’.

As well as providing specialist clothing the charity also participates in various other areas of baby loss. They run a Support Group in Plymouth, have created a Memorial Garden at Derriford Hospital, and are launching an awareness campaign regarding the need to talk and still remember and are constantly launching new projects to help parents through such tragic circumstances.

We recognise the remarkable work they are undertaking and will continue to support them in any way we can here at Airport Business

"Memory Matters" Receive Enterprise Funding

Memory Matters South West CIC has been awarded £80,000 to develop a ‘dementia hub’ in the city centre.

Plymouth City Council is giving £420,000 to support social enterprise in the city, which the council was awarded through the Social Enterprise Investment Fund.

One of the key recipients is Memory Matters South West CIC investment, who have been awarded £80,000 to develop a ‘dementia hub’ in the city centre.

Around 150 people with dementia and their carers have been involved in drawing up ideas for the centre which will be a place where people can pop in to feel at ease and socialise as well as receive advice, information and take part in activities. The project plans to set up a ‘nostalgia café’ for all to reminisce back to the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. It will be a place where people can receive training as be a centre for visiting therapists and organisations.

Director Kate Smith speaking to the Plymouth Evening Herald said: “We are delighted to be able to have this opportunity to build this cafe and hub in Plymouth". “It is important that we could speak to potential users and get them to guide us in our plan, so that they are at the very heart of it. We needed to make it a place that’s friendly and not clinical. This fund will help us build and kit the building out.”

Congratulations to Memory Matters

Successful Lottery Bid Provides Long Term Support to Five Dementia Day Clubs

PEOPLE with mild to moderate dementia will benefit from a new project in five Cornish towns as a not-for-profit company secures Lottery funding.

Memory Matters South West is celebrating its successful bid for almost £300,000 through the Reaching Communities England Big Lottery Fund, ensuring it can deliver day clubs in Liskeard, Lostwithiel, St Austell, Wadebridge, and Bodmin for the next three years.

Director Laura Walker said: “This is such fantastic news for us as it means we can build on what we offer at present as well as introduce new day clubs in new areas, helping people with dementia to take part in fun and stimulating activities within their communities.”

The organisation assists people with mild to moderate dementia through Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST), which uses techniques such as number and word association to increase cognition, and which the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence recommends is offered to all people with these levels of dementia.

Its day clubs, run by experienced activity workers, offer the opportunity for people to take part in a variety of activities such as categorising objects or creative pursuits to spark the imagination and memory, with the structured sessions creating an interesting, secure and vibrant environment.

Stephen Tamblin, from St Dennis, has been supported by Memory Matters South West and said: “This will help with my memory and make me more happy.

“It’s great to get out of the house and meet other people with dementia and try to help them come to terms with it.”

The organisation will begin to deliver five 26-week programmes at the day clubs from December (2015).

Fellow director Kate Smith said: “Along with CST in the morning we will provide ‘living well’ sessions in the afternoon that will include tips and techniques for people to live will with dementia independently at home.

“We will also be working with dementia friendly initiatives and other voluntary and statutory organisations to ensure as many people as possible can benefit from the project.”

People interested in joining a day club or finding out more about Memory Matters South West can visit the Memory Matters website or call 01752 692264.
